Scandinavian style has become even more popular within the last few years, with the uprise of Scandinavian influencers and street style stars, like Pernille Teisbaek, Jeanette Friis Madsen and Elin Kling. So, what is Scandinavian style? Well, there are some differences if you look at Swedish, Norwegian and Danish style. With the Swedes being more minimalistic and the Danes more playful when it comes to patterns and colors for example. But the simplicity still stands as a core for Scandinavian style with muted colors, such as black, grey, beige, white and navy blue. There might also be a pop of color, a stylish accessory or a pair of colorful shoes.
The clothes are often practical and comfortable with a mix of masculine and feminine. Why not wear a girly dress with sporty sneakers, for example? Our clothing is there to help us in our daily lives juggling kids, career and social life and should not stand in our way. The Scandinavian style is casual but sophisticated with an attitude of not trying too hard. Jeannette Friis Madsen describe it with four words: comfortable / classic / casual / cool.
Less is more and simple design goes a long way. Emphasis is put on quality fabrics and classis styles that you can mix and match easily with the rest of your wardrobe. Because of the cold climate Scandinavians have become experts on how to layer the clothes in an interesting way, creating a personalized look. Expressions like “Hygge” (Norwegian and Danish for coziness) and “Lagom” (Swedish for moderation) describes the style.
